Fred is back for you to share his experience and advice on choosing and installing a mulch canvas.

What is this beast?

Mulch is a woven tarpaulin that is installed on the ground. It makes it possible to arrange flowerbeds of plants, to obtain a clean and healthy garden, without weeds.

Gardening is an activity that I enjoy. You have to be manual, have a hint of creativity and above all enjoy an afternoon outdoors. In short, all of me! Regarding mulching canvas, I admit that it was a great first but the seller had assured me that the installation was rather simple to realize. And then I had to cover only a few square meters of solid and not the entire garden!

All this to say that I started by starting, as always, by recovering my panoply of the perfect gardener: thick gloves, comfortable outfit, rubber boots and of course, the bob to protect from the sun!

For tools, the list was rather short

A roll of mulch cloth, metal stakes, a good spade, a rake and a hammer. I opted for a canvas type 86 grams/ m2 green polyethylene.

To tell you the truth, I had the choice with the 50g/m² tarpaulin but I preferred to invest in a high-end mulch, whose life is much longer. As Martine says, given the time we spend strolling in the garden, we might as well choose quality materials and equipment!

The seller told me to prepare the ground before unrolling anything. Ok, chief … So I conscientiously dug, then weeded and finally flattened the area of the massif (without pulling the roses already in place obviously). Goodbye stones and weeds! I was then able to unroll the mulch on the ground and plant metal stakes about every 20 cm: they allow to fix the canvas in the ground discreetly but rudely solid!

Our massif is not particularly extravagant: all in length, about 2 meters wide. So we simply unrolled side by side two lengths of mulch cloth. But if you have a round solid or other bizarre shape, the canvas is easily cut with a cutter to perfectly fit all eccentricities!

Easy and fast installation

Then, it is enough to cut the woven canvas where you want to plant plants.

Spring has just resumed, but already, I must say that the weeds have completely disappeared: the massif is really impeccable and will be much more when the plants are in bloom! Final verdict in a few months!
